Tennis-Ball-Sized Tumor Removed In Utero
In May, Drs. Rubén Quintero and Eftichia Kontopoulos of the Jackson Fetal Therapy Institute performed the first surgery in history to remove a tennis-ball-sized tumor from a baby’s mouth while still in her mother’s womb. If she had survived birth without this procedure, Leyna Gonzalez would have required an immediate tracheotomy in order to breathe and would have had multiple surgeries thereafter.

Disaster Strikes Haiti, Jackson Responds
On January 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, resulting in hundreds of thousands dead or missing, and affecting an estimated 3 million people. Miami had the largest community of Haitians in the United States, and many worked at the medical center. Some 205 of the most injured were brought to Jackson, and all survived. In June, Jackson was recognized by the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (NAPH) for its life-saving response.

In June, Jackson was recognized by the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (NAPH) for its life-saving response.

A Miraculous Turning Point
President Carlos A. Migoya and his leadership team came to Jackson in 2011 in part to improve Jackson’s financial situation. The system was at risk of losing $415 million by the close of the fiscal year 2012. Instead, Jackson showed a miraculous surplus of nearly $8.2 million.

Voters Support Jackson, Miracle-Building Bond Approved
In early November, more than 65 percent of Miami-Dade County voters supported Jackson’s $830-million Miracle-Building Bond Program to modernize all facilities, build urgent care centers throughout the county, construct a new children’s ambulatory care center, and replace the rehabilitation hospital.

Florida’s First Three-Way Kidney Transplant
Miami Transplant Institute physicians successfully completed Florida’s first three-way, paired kidney exchange transplant. Also known as a “kidney swap,” this occurs when a living kidney donor is incompatible with a recipient and agrees to exchange their kidney with another donor/recipient. On July 9, the team occupied six operating rooms at Jackson, simultaneously transplanting three kidneys into three recipients. The program was the only initiative of its kind in the region.

Ceremonial Ground Breaks On New Rehabilitation Hospital Construction
On April 29, Ceremonial Ground was broken to begin construction of a 100-bed, private-room facility, the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial, to replace the current rehabilitation hospital.

On June 12, the Public Health Trust purchased a 27-acre parcel of land in the City of Doral to become home to Jackson West, a medical campus that would house a 100-bed hospital, an ambulatory center for pediatric specialized care, and separate free-standing emergency room/urgent care centers for adults and children.

Fifteen Organs For Two Young Siblings
On February 23, 1-year-old Texas-born Liam Garza successfully received eight new organs, which was his only chance of surviving Berdon syndrome. The rare but fatal genetic disorder affecting newborns had also threatened to claim his sister, Delilah Valdez, who received a 7-organ transplant at Jackson in 2011 when she was 16 months old. Liam’s team included transplant surgeons Drs. Rodrigo Vianna, Akin Tekin and Gaetano Ciancio and pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Jennifer Garcia.
